ARULMIGU KAPALEESHWARAR TEMPLE


The Temple is located at about 8 kms from Chennai central railway stations.The Temple is an ancient shrine of the 7 th century A.D.It has a 120 feet tall Gopuram with colourful architecture.Lord shiva known as Kapaleeswarar and Goddess Karpagambal.

History
The Temple was built in 7 th century CE by the Pallavas.The original temple was built where the Santhome church is located in Chennai.The original Temple was demolished by Portuguese and the present temple was built in the 16 th century by the Vijayanagar kings




The name  Mylapore is derived from the legend Goddess Uma worshipped Siva in the form of peacock.




The Arichitecture of the temple is Dravidian style.

The major highlights of the Temple are the towering and elaborately decorated gopuram.




The East Gopuram is almost 131 foot tall and a fine display of Dravidian architecture.
There are separate sannadhis for Vinayagar,Annamalaiyar,murugar,saneeswarar.

The lingam is a swaymabu lingam one of the 64 in the world  and lingam is decorated with flowers,bhilva leaves,rudraksha garland and vibhuti.
