Indian museum is the largest and oldest museum in India and has rare collections of antiques,Armour and ornaments,fossils,skeletons,mummies and Mughal paintings.






The ninth oldest museum of the world and largest in India,the Indian museum is located in the old city of kolkata popularly known as Jadughar




Anthropological section

 It showcase objects belonging to both tribal and non tribal peoples of India.





Over 60 galleries display a collection ranging from ancient sculptures and Egyptian mummies.



Art sections
This sections comprises of textiles,miniature paintings,beautiful art.
Objects from Asian countries like Japan, China,Tibet,Nepal,Srilanka,Myanmar,Java,Thailand,Persian carpets,Kanthas of Bengal land many more.


History

The Indian museum in kolkata was founded in 1814 within the Asian society building.This is one of the oldest museum founded across the globe.It was founded by famous botanist from Denmark,Dr.Nathaniel Wallich






It contains 60 galleries and is divided into 6 prime sectors like Anthropology,Art,Geology,Archaeology,Zoology and Industry.

Archaeological section
It contains showcases of stone age artifacts from India and abroad with prehistoric antiquities from Harappa,Mohenjodaro,ranging from 2500 B.C to 1500 B.C.
Egyptian museum contains 4000 years old mummies.The gallery houses gold coin introduced by the great Kanishka,Samudragupta,Kumaragupta-1,Akbar and Jahangir.
