CHAMUNDESHWARI TEMPLE

Chamundi hills located at Mysore ,Karnataka state of India.
The hill is 3489 ft above the sea levels and is 12 km from Mysore city.
The energitic visitors are ready to climb the chamundi hills with barefoot to the top of the hills.
It is said that Raja Wodeyar intended to build a Gopura,and for that purpose erected four pillar post,which were removed when the present gopura was built by Krishnaraja Wodeyar .

According to mythology this was the domain of the demon called Mahishasura.
The place was called as Mahishasura or Mahishuru and later now they are calling as Mysore.
People prayed to the Goddess to save from Mahishasura.The Goddess Chamundeshwari then killed Mahishasura and saves the people.so that the Goddess is called as Mahishasuramardhini.
The oldest temple of Mysore is located atop the chamundi hills.

In 1659 Dodda Devaraja Wodeyar built 1000 steps and huge Nandi,Lord Shiva's bull.
Latter the Wodayrar kings treated Goddesss Chamundeshwari as gaurdian deity of royal family.
coming from chamundi hills down we can able to spot syatue of Nandi( Bull ) which is 5 meter tall and is the third largest nandi in India.Nandi and the temple beside it are located at the 700 th step of the chamundi hills
