KOKILAMBAL THIRUKAMESHWARAR TEMPLE

Thiru kameshwarar temple is situated in a small town called villianur which is 11 km from pondicherry city.
The Chola temple was constructed in the 12 th century CE.

MAIN GOPURAM

The history name of temple is Vilwanallur which means good city of vilwa trees(BEL).



The lingam is made of mud and so cannot withstand the direct abhishekam of water.

So the lingam is covered with brass vessels before water is poured

According to the history ,the king was suffering from leprosy and worshipped Lord Shiva in this temple and got cured.
The nandhi in this temple is called prasava nandhi and woman pay the bull before their pregancy delivery,which is significant of this temple.

ARCHITECTURE OF TEMPLE
The rays of sunlight fall on the presidin deity onthe 9th,11th and19th days of the month of Panguni(March to April).
Brahmotsavam is the main event celebrated for 10 days from full moon day in vaikasi.
Car festival also famous in this temple and during this festival a 15 metere tall chariot is pulled by the devotees.
